Mea is our little Miracle ! And is meant to be with me ! To start off with her mother Connie was scanned and found to not only be carrying just one puppy but also to be carrying a lot of fluid and it was thought she was having a Pyometra and that probably the one puppy would not survive. But survive she did and there on the second scan she could be seen kicking about with a good heart beat. But still there was a lot of fluid. It was suggested that we did a C-section the day before she should have been due, which we did. To everyone surprise Mea had survived even though her mother was having a Pyo and both her uterine horns were full of puss.
Mea was one of life's survivors and still is !
This was Mea at 4 months
She was aptly named and stayed with me. Eventually in 2007 we decided to mate her and she herself was also scanned with a singleton and like her mother also had to have a c-section for a singleton bitch puppy Namely Maddie [Purbarn Quite A Madam], who now lives with Pat Keebel in Essex where Maddie excels at Obedience, but has also taken BOB's at Open shows and had 1sts at Champ Shows.
But Mea was to add yet another feat of survival to her first one, as on Christmas Eve of 2007 she came in from evening exercise with the rest of the Purbarn Pack but looked very unwell. Her breathing was labored her head was down and her stomach was distended. Needless to say this was not going to wait till after Christmas, so she was rushed off to the Vets who after lots of prodding and poking exclaimed 'She has heart failure and has weeks rather than months to live'. Well as you can imagine I was devastated to be told my lovely three and a half year old bitch was going to die ! I spent probably all of Christmas going through the internet to see if there was anything we could do.
Eventually I found Jo Dukes-Mcewan at Liverpool Veterinary Hospital, who said she would see Mea early in the New Year.
She went in to the Cardiology Department where she was kept for 6 days during which time it was found that her heart rate which should be around 60 to 70 beats per minuet was beating at over 250 beats per minuet. Eventually we were able to pick her up and she came home with what seemed like a truck load of drugs, some of which I had to administer at 2am.
Now in 2010 she is still with us on greatly reduced drugs, thankfully I do not have to get up in the middle of the night any more ! We have not wrapped her up in cotton wool she still lives life to the full !
Mea out picking up with her heart monitor on.
She has won a BOB at a Gundog Open Show and has been out once a week picking up, even doing one day out with her Heart Monitor on, she looked very fetching with her camouflage bandage holding the monitor in place.
She is costing us an arm and a leg in drugs and visits to Liverpool Vet Collage, but she is worth it and while she is enjoying life she will continue to be Mea our little Miracle !
